Despite playing without three of its starters, the Princeton University basketball team had four players score in double figures, led by Ray Robins' 23 points, en route to a 76-60 victory over Brown Friday night.
The win allowed hot-handed Princeton (11-7, 3-0), which shot nearly 60 percent from the field, to remain tied for the Ivy League lead with Penn, which trounced Yale, 61-36. The Tigers' victory was their fourth straight and 10th in a row against Brown, which fell to 6-11 and 3-2 in the league.
Princeton again played without co-captain Mason Rocca, as well as freshman guard Spencer Gloger, who was sidelined with an ankle sprain. Starting forward Eugene Baah, who has seen limited action since suffering a severe thigh bruise two weeks ago, saw just three minutes of action. But the rest of the team responded, with the Tigers getting solid efforts from everyone. Robins missed just one shot all night, hitting seven of eight from the field, including all three three-point attempts, and all six free throw tries.
Guard Ahmed El-Nokali scored a career-high 14 points, connecting on three of four three-point attempts and contributing four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Mike Bechtold, who started in place of Gloger, played a solid game on both ends of the court and finished with eight points, a team-leading seven rebounds and five assists.
Center Chris Young, though sitting nearly 10 minutes due to foul trouble, added 16 points, four rebounds and three assists. And C.J. Chapman, who has played well for the Tigers since starting four games ago, added 11 points.
Nate Walton, who missed most of the last two games due to a broken right wrist, played 17 minutes and contributed four points.
Princeton led throughout the first half, but was never able to pull away from the Bears, due in large part to the hot hand of Jesse Wood, who nailed all three three-point attempts, and 6-5 freshman guard Earl Hunt, who had nine points. Hunt, the leading scorer in the Ivy League, finished the game with 24 points.
The Tigers' largest lead in the first half was seven, 29-22, after Chapman scored on a backdoor pass from Walton with 5:20 left. But about a minute later, Young picked up his second foul and went to the bench, where he remained for the rest of the half. Brown took advantage, scoring five straight points to go into the locker room trailing by just two. After intermission, Brown took a short-lived lead, 31-30, with 19 minutes to go after Travis Brown scored off an offensive rebound. El-Nokali put the Tigers back up by two with a three-pointer and Ray Robins connected on two straight threes to give Princeton a 39-33 lead with 16:21 left. But Brown kept it close until the eight-minute mark. With Princeton leading 49-44, C.J. Chapman started a 10-2 run with a pair of free throws. Chris Young scored underneath on a feed from Robins and Chapman followed with a three-pointer to give the Tigers' a 12-point cushion with 5:45 to go.
During the final four minutes, Princeton spent most of the time marching to the free throw line, connecting on 13 of 15 shots, as the Bears fouled in an attempt to get back in the game.
For the night, Princeton converted on 23 of 27 foul shot attempts.
The Tigers will play Yale in New Haven Saturday night beginning at 7. Yale, 5-11, won its first three league games, defeating Harvard, Dartmouth and Brown, before losing a rematch to Brown in Providence, 76-68, and falling again Friday night to Penn.
Yale stunned Princeton, 60-58, in double overtime in the last meeting between the two teams. The Tigers had defeated Yale, 66-33, at Jadwin earlier in the year.
