Whatever Ray Robins wanted, Ray Robins got.
Three-pointers, layups, steals, assists, rebounds, even flying dunks.
Starting in place of the injured Nate Walton (who had been starting for injured co-captain Mason Rocca), the 6-foot-7 forward didn't seem like a sophomore in his first collegiate start.
Robins scored 27 points — the most by any Princeton player making his first start since a player named Bill Bradley scored 28 in his 1962 debut against Lafayette. Robins' new career high was nine times greater than his own previous one and paced the Tigers to a 90-49 win over Catholic University (13-3) on Monday night.
"I was happy for Ray," said Princeton head coach Bill Carmody, whose team improved to 8-7 in the final game before its Ivy League opener against Cornell on Friday. "Maybe it does give the guy confidence to do some other things. Maybe it doesn't. Every night is different. He was open and he hit the shots. If you're open against Cornell, you have to make shots. It's very similar."
After missing his first two shots — both three-pointers — while Princeton fell behind, 3-2, Robins then hit his next four shots, had two steals and two assists in the Tigers' 22-1 run that ended with 10:52 still to play in the first half. Shortly after, Robins received a warm reception as he left the game for a breather.
"To be honest, I didn't think about points at all," Robins said of his pregame preparation. "I was pretty surprised the first time I caught the ball and I was wide open. My man was in front of Chris (Young). That's when I realized that I was going to have to hit some shots."
Robins had no problems with that no matter where he was on the court. Reinserted into the game minutes after getting a break, Robins, to the delight of the 4,231 Jadwin Gym fans, elevated to deliver a highlight-reel slam dunk while being fouled. The three-point play swelled Princeton's lead to 40-11 with 4:41 left in the half.
"I'll remember it definitely," Robins said of the slam. "It's one I've had a couple times in practice. Usually I come off Chris and get a hand-off. This one was off the dribble, but when I turned there was no one there. At that point you just go hard. If it had called for it, I would have laid it in."
Instead Catholic, ranked 19th nationally among Division III schools, got a look at a Division I dunk. Robins finished the half with 16 points and five rebounds in only 14 minutes of action as the Tigers shot 59.4 percent to stake themselves to a commanding 51-19 lead.
"The kid, what's his name, Robins, he doesn't even start," Catholic head coach Mike Lonergan said incredulously. "I read in the paper that he was starting. We have a center guarding him who's 6'7" and slow. You have to give up something. But after exams, I didn't think they'd come out and shoot like that."
The second half became more of an opportunity for others to shine as Robins and most of the other starters gave way to the reserves with almost 14 minutes remaining in the game. In his limited second-half action, Robins still managed to knock down all three of the three-pointers he attempted. His only miss came from the free throw line. At Pablo Robles (Calif.) High, Robins set a school record when he shot 93.1 percent from the foul line as a junior.
"I'm not that surprised," Carmody said of Robins' performance. "He's been playing well in practice. He missed his first couple of shots, but there was a calmness with his shooting. Now it seems like he's playing in the structured way we do things."
Monday night, Ray Robins looked every bit the part of a regular starter for the Tigers. Princeton will need consistent contributions as it begins Ivy League play Friday on the road in Ithaca, N.Y., against Cornell, a team that is 6-8 overall and 0-2 in Ivy action already.
