Princeton hit five three-pointers in the first six minutes to open up a 10-point lead and then coasted to a surprisingly easy 81-52 win over Columbia Friday night at Jadwin Gym.
The Tigers, who hit just four three-pointers in Tuesday's loss to Penn, connected on nine in the first half and four of it first five in the second half against Columbia.
Freshman Spencer Gloger, who was held scoreless against Penn, led Princeton with 22 points on six of 11 from the field and eight of 10 from the free throw line. Chris Young and C.J. Chapman, who hit five of six three-pointers, finished with 15 points, and Ahmed El-Nokali added 11 points on four for four shooting and a team-high five assists.
Ray Robins, who started in place of Mason Rocca, had nine points, five rebounds and four assists in 25 minutes. Rocca played just seven minutes, spelling Young for six minutes in the first half after he picked up his second foul.
With the win, Princeton improved to 14-9, 6-2 in the league, and remained two games behind Penn in the Ivy race. The Quakers fought off Cornell, 73-63, Friday night at the Palestra. Princeton will face Cornell at Jadwin Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Columbia, which gave Princeton a tough time in a 53-46 loss in New York City last month, was never in the game Friday night. Chapman opened the scoring with a three-pointer and connected on another trey two minutes later to give Princeton a 9-4 lead. Following a layup by Young, El-Nokali and Gloger connected on threes to give Princeton a 17-7 lead.
The Tigers continued to widen the margin by combining aggressive defense, which forced 11 first-half turnovers, with good ball movement, solid rebounding and excellent outside shooting.
By halftime, Princeton had built a 41-19 lead, with Gloger scoring 13 points. The Tigers shot 14 of 26 from the floor and 9 of 17 from three-point range in the first half.
Princeton picked up where it left off in the second half, building a 29-point lead at the 13:10 mark after hitting five of eight threes.
Coach Bill Carmody began substituting freely with about five minutes left and the Tigers up by 30.
The Tigers, who employed a full-court press early in the game, forced 17 turnovers and outrebounded Columbia, 27-25.
Columbia, which fell to 10-12, 4-5 in the Ivy League, came into Jadwin hoping to get to the .500 mark. The Lions, who lost four starters to graduation last year, have had just one winning season since 1981-82.
