Harvard's best defense for Chris Young was an elbow that opened a cut above his left eye with just under 10 minutes to go in the first half.
The Princeton University center already had 13 of the Tigers' 15 points at that time, his last two on a swift dunk with 10:02 to play that gave Princeton a 15-13 lead. The Tigers would never trail again in defeating the Crimson, 73-55, to remain one game behind Pennsylvania, 74-59 winners over Dartmouth, in the Ivy League race.
Princeton (5-1 in the Ivies, 13-8 overall) hosts Penn (6-0, 13-7) 8 p.m. Tuesday at Jadwin Gym.
Young left the game for six minutes to have the cut repaired with butterfly stitches. According to Princeton sports information director, Young left immediately after the game to receive five stitches to close the cut.
"I didn't think I did anything," Young said of the play. "I turned to go up the court and I saw the ref. He said, 'Oh, my God.' I thought I'd lost my contact, but when the ref said that, I knew it was kind of bad.
"It swelled up pretty good. The only time it bothered me was on the foul line. I couldn't open my left eye too much and I didn't have too much depth perception. Other than that, I wasn't thinking about it too much."
Nor did it slow him down much. He returned with four minutes left in the half to lead Princeton to a 29-17 halftime lead. The Tiger co-captain had 20 of those points on perfect six-for-six shooting including 3-for-3 from three-point range.
He did not miss a shot until the 9:41 mark of the second half shortly after Princeton held its largest lead of the game, 49-30. Young finished with a career-high 30 points on 10-for-11 shooting. His lone miss was from three-point range as the shot clock ran down. Against Dartmouth on Friday, Young had just two points.
"Chris really came out with a lot of energy," PU head coach Bill Carmody said. "Almost everyone I saw yesterday after the game said he wasn't really doing too much. That he only had two points. I tried to compare his to when Kit Mueller was playing. Sometimes he would get eight points and do everything and we'd win by 20. Other times he'd get 20 and it'd be a close game or you lose.
"I thought Chris was very good last night. He was stopping everything, but like I'm sure we all are, and kids are, I'm sure he was disappointed in getting two points. That's human nature. Then he came out tonight and had a lot of energy. He was cutting like I haven't seen him cut, and I told him this, since last year. Just seemed to have a zest for playing."
Only three Princeton players scored in the first half. Point guard Ahmed El-Nokali had seven of his 13 points and co-captain Mason Rocca, in his second game after returning from Dec. 29 ankle surgery, added a layup.
Rocca finished with seven points and Nate Walton added 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting and a 2-for-3 performance left-handed from the foul line. They helped carry Princeton's offense when Young was out of the game. The Tigers closed the first half with a 14-4 run, and maintained at least an 11-point advantage in the second half. Young capped off Princeton's effort when he took an alley oop from Spencer Gloger and slammed it home with 58 seconds to play.
"There are nights when everything seems to be working," Young said. "Some nights you have nights when every shot is falling for you and everything is going your way. Last night wasn't one of those nights for me. I wasn't looking to get involved in the scoring last night. Tonight, I had the shots and I took them. They were falling. I felt pretty good."
Tiger fans hope to see that Chris Young on Tuesday. They started up the "We want Penn" chant with just over two minutes to play against Harvard.
They'll have their wish when the defending Ivy champions visit Old Nassau on Tuesday.
"The Penn game should be a very tough game," Young said. "I see they've been killing people. I saw them play once earlier this year, but they're playing much better now. We're going to have our work cut out for us.
"They're definitely going to be ready, but I like the way we played this weekend. We have guys back and it's given us a lot of energy and I think it's going to be a very good game."
Princeton came back from a 27-point deficit to defeat the Quakers, 50-49, in the teams' first meeting last season.
