Yale came into Jadwin Gym Friday night with a 7-18 record and a four-game losing streak.
It had won just one of 12 road games and had lost at Princeton by an average of 31 points over the past three years.
Starting center Neil Yanke, Yale's leading rebounder, was out of the lineup with calcium deposits in a calf bone.
All the elements seemed to be in place for a blowout. And sure enough, that's how it began. Yale ran off the first nine points of the game, and Princeton missed its first nine shots, failing to score for nearly eight minutes.
But thanks to the second-half exploits of Princeton center Chris Young, who finished with 19 points, a career-high 13 points and five blocked shots, and forward Ray Robins, who had all 16 of his points after intermission, the Tigers avoided another upset at the hands of Yale.
The Bulldogs, whose 44-42 win over Princeton in New Haven last month may have cost the Tigers a shot at the Ivy League title, went into the locker room Friday night leading 18-17 despite shooting just 24 percent from the floor.
The lead see-sawed back and forth early in the second half. After Robins and Young hit consecutive three-pointers about three minutes into the period to give Princeton a 25-22 lead, it looked like the Tigers might pull away. But Yale stayed close for the next 12 minutes. A three-point jumper by Onaje Woodbine with 5:06 to go pulled the Bulldogs to within three, 40-37.
Robins, who hit six of eight shots from the field in the second half, responded by putting back his own missed shot. Young then drilled a long three with 3:18 left to give Princeton its biggest lead of the night, eight points.
After Woodbine sank two free throws, C.J. Chapman iced the game with another three-pointer to put Princeton up 48-39 with 2:32 to go. The Tigers went eight for eight from the free throw line in the final minute as Yale fouled in an attempt to stop the clock and get back into the game.
Princeton, which won its fifth straight game, shot 54 percent from the floor in the second half after connecting on just 33 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half.
Ahmed El-Nokali was held scoreless against Yale for the second straight time.
With the win, Princeton improved to 18-9 and 10-2 in the league. Penn breezed past Brown, 85-62, Friday night for its 12th straight win. More importantly, it maintained its two-game Ivy League lead over the Tigers. If Penn beats Yale Saturday night, it will clinch its second straight league title.
